Kresimir Beljak, President, Croatian Peasant Party (HSS)
11 July 2016, VG Intelligence Weekly Issue 14
On 7 July, with 87 votes in favour, 13 against and five abstentions, the HSS decided to run in the upcoming parliamentary elections in a coalition led by the Social Democratic Party (SDP). HSS President Kresimir Beljak said the decision had been made by an overwhelming majority of votes, and that he would not have approved if the decision was made by a lesser majority. The SDP has allegedly offered the HSS the post of a Deputy Prime Minister, the Ministry of Agriculture and four or five seats in the Parliament, including reports of up to 100 positions within any future government. HSS Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Marijana Petir and former HSS President Branko Hrg opposed the decision, advocating a coalition with the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).
