Andrej Plenkovic, President of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)

On 17 July, with 97,823 out of 208,000 party members’ votes (i.e. 46.8%), Andrej Plenkovic, Croatian Member of the European Parliament (MEP), was voted in unopposed as the fifth President of the HDZ. Plenkovic replaced Tomislav Karamarko, who resigned in June, after instigating the collapse of the Oreskovic Government and failing to secure a new parliamentary majority to form a new government. “Croatia needs a new approach, a modern political platform and strategic U-turn…achieving the joint national and social objectives must be preferred to political and ideological differences”, said Plenkovic upon his election. The new HDZ chief asked voters to support the party’s efforts to amend the obsolete policies of political trade-offs, non-transparent funding of parties and a selective justice system. Plenkovic added he would like the HDZ to become a generator of political stability and a stakeholder that would facilitate the conditions for economic growth…
