EU SUMMIT: European Council Discusses Strategic Priorities for EU in Next Five Years
On 26-27 June, a meeting of the European Council was held in Ypres and Brussels. EU leaders discussed strategic priorities for the EU in the next five years in the areas of freedom, security and justice. They concluded the 2014 European Semester and called for additional efforts to facilitate economic growth and create new jobs. The European Council also took stock of progress made towards a final decision in October on the 2030 climate and energy policy framework and debated the issue of the EU’s energy security.
The European Council greeted the signature of the association agreements and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), between the EU and Georgia and Moldova. The gathered officials also welcomed the signature of the remainder of the Association Agreement and FTA between the EU and Ukraine.
