EU AFFAIRS: European Parliamentary Committee Supports Croatia’s EU Progress
The European Parliament (EP) Committee on Foreign Affairs discussed Croatia’s EU membership progress, in light of the upcoming European Commission’s (EC) final monitoring report in March. The committee praised Croatia’s progress and called upon member states (i.e. Germany, Slovenia, and Denmark) to ratify the EU Accession Treaty before 1 July.
The committee dismissed amendment proposals that called for continued EC monitoring of Croatia after EU membership. The EU Constitutional Committee also met and approved a proposal that would restructure the EP (2014-2019), which would reduce the number of MEPs for 12 member states, including Croatia from 12 to 11.
The Lisbon Treaty (2009) limits the seats of the EP to a maximum of 751 and, due to Croatia’s membership; the number of MEPs for member states must be reduced…
