On 29 June, Environmental and Nature Protection Minister Slaven Dobrovic (MOST) presented the new Waste Management Plan 2016-2022. The document intends to integrate the EU Circular Economy Package into Croatia’s waste management system, promoting the separate collection of waste and recycling schemes. However, the plan was severely criticised by various interested policy stakeholders, including the Croatian Employers’ Association (HUP) and the Croatian Chamber of Economy (HGK). Bernard Jakelic, HUP Deputy Director, sent a letter to Brussels calling on the European Commission to halt the plan. On 28 June, Croatia received an informal opinion issued by the Directorate General (DG) Regional and Urban Policy and the DG Environment. Both DGs stated that the proposed investments are fragmented and not justified, and that there is no integrated approach in planning the necessary infrastructure in specific regions, the waste prevention programme does not include sufficient details to understand the actions to be undertaken to reduce the waste, et al.
