Economic Diplomacy – Successful Refocus of Policy Turnaround

At the Annual Conference of Vlahovic Group’s Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs Network in Croatia, held on 29 June in Zagreb, Mr. Jasmin Devlic, Head of the Economic Relations Sector at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MVEP), held a presentation on the scope of work and the activities of the ministry’s economic diplomacy program.
Economic diplomacy as a concept was formally inaugurated in October 2013 by former Deputy Foreign Minister Josko Klisovic (SDP), when the Independent Sector for Bilateral Economics (SSGB) was established as part of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MVEP). The SSGB was designed to serve the actual needs of Croatian exporters and was founded as a result of a comparative analysis of most successful economic diplomacies in the world; one of the diplomatic models taken into consideration was the British model. Its scope of work are exports, foreign investments and the support of Croatian companies abroad. The SSGB’s objective is to promote Croatia’s economic interests abroad by developing a new diplomatic culture, adapting the national institutional framework to new challenges, defining priority markets for Croatia, establishing new forms of diplomatic communication and information management, processing of beneficiaries’ inquires, etc…
