COMMENTARY: Croatia’s Economic Policy – A Story of an Economic Car “Spinning its Wheels”

Last week, the World Bank (WB) issued its yearly global “Doing Business 2014” report.  The report had Croatia falling from 84th to 89th place  out of 189 countries worldwide.

The 2014 report addresses issues, such as starting a business, receipt of construction permits, paying taxes, trading across borders, getting electricity, getting credit, protecting investors, enforcing contracts, etc.; the report encompassed research of economies in 2013.  To be fair, Croatia’s comparable ranking is actually 88th, since this year’s report included an additional 4 countries.

The 2014 report’s shows that the top five remained unchanged from 2013, with Singapore being at the top of the list, followed by Hong Kong, New Zealand, the U.S. and Denmark.  Croatia scored better only in four areas…
